In 2022, a Malaysian court did something genuinely surprising: it convicted an actual prime minister for being an actual thief. Najib Razak, who founded the 1Malaysia Development Berhad fund in 2009 ostensibly to turbocharge Malaysia's economy, was found guilty of seven charges including criminal breach of trust, money laundering, and abuse of power in connection with $10 million diverted from 1MDB's subsidiary SRC International into his personal bank accounts. The court handed him 12 years in prison and fines totalling 210 million ringgit. Not content to stop there, Malaysian courts returned in late 2024 to sentence him to an additional 15 years for separate 1MDB-related charges involving abuse of power and money laundering. The judge, apparently a fan of understatement, noted that Najib made Attila the Hun 'look like a choirboy.' The former PM, who had loudly denied wrongdoing for years while $4.5 billion went missing globally, is now serving his sentence — though his jail term was halved in 2024, because Malaysia remains Malaysia.
