In a stunning display of bureaucratic ambition, China has decided that domestic corruption simply isn't keeping pace with globalization, announcing plans to enact a cross-border anti-corruption law. Because nothing says 'we're serious about fighting corruption' quite like creating more laws while already being notorious for executing corrupt officials.
The new legislation, unveiled during the National People's Congress, aims to tackle corruption that transcends national boundaries. One can only marvel at the irony of a country that regularly ranks poorly on global transparency indices now positioning itself as the international sheriff of clean governance. The law will presumably help China chase down corrupt officials who thought fleeing abroad would save them from the long arm of Xi Jinping's anti-corruption campaign, which has already netted over a million officials since 2012.
